The 18 Best Medium-Sized Dogs That’ll Give You Tons of Love

Dogs come in all shapes and sizes and are actually the most diverse mammals on the planet (with over 1,000 different and unique breeds). This means that every type of person can find the perfect breed for them. Medium-sized breeds are generally a solid choice because they can live in both apartments and houses. Some are physical activity freaks while others prefer the laid-back life of a lapdog.

English Bulldog

The English Bulldog is a chunky bundle of love with a face only a mother could love. Known for their loose, wrinkled skin and distinctive pushed-in nose, these dogs are surprisingly gentle and loyal. They’ll always relish the opportunity to spend time with you, provided they can crash on the couch and relax each day. It’s the English Bulldog way.

Shetland Sheepdogs, or Shelties, are like miniature Collies with an extra dose of fluff and charm. These intelligent and energetic dogs excel in agility and obedience. They’re incredibly loyal and form strong bonds with their families but require a steady dose of daily exercise to feel truly happy.

These herding dogs are incredibly intelligent, eager to work, and excel in various dog sports. They’re also some of the smartest (and sassiest) dogs in the world where, with enough training, they’ll be able to remember dozens of commands. They aren’t, however, the ideal breed for apartment living as they require plenty of exercise.

Basset Hound

Basset Hounds have droopy ears and soulful eyes, and are the epitome of a laid-back companion. They have an incredible sense of smell and a stubborn streak. And while they may not be the most active dogs, they have a lot of love to give and enjoy leisurely walks and lots of snuggling. Bassets also require regular skin fold cleaning as that’s where bacteria and dirt settle the most.

Border Collie

If dogs could get PhDs, Border Collies would have several. These brainy pups are like furry geniuses, always ready to solve a puzzle or herd your flock (or kids). They have endless energy and need lots of mental and physical exercise. They’re incredibly loyal and will keep you constantly entertained with their antics.

Australian Cattle Dog

Think of the Australian Cattle Dog as the action hero of the dog world. Tough, smart, and always up for a challenge. They bond closely with their humans and are the happiest when they have a job to do, whether it’s herding cattle or bringing soda from a fridge. Perfect for active families who love adventure.

Wire Fox Terrier

Wire Fox Terriers are like little bundles of energy wrapped in a wiry coat. These dogs are always ready for an adventure, whether it’s chasing a squirrel or investigating every corner of your yard. Their name is fully justified because their coat is thickly packed and has a wiry texture to it.

American Eskimo

If you need a new cuddle buddy that’s as soft as a cloud, the Eskie is an excellent choice. These dogs have arguably the most balanced character, being neither shy nor outgoing. The same is true for their energy levels – a mix of zoomies and complete relaxation. There’s only one drawback to this breed and it’s their white coat which can get dirty easily.

Cocker Spaniel

Cocker Spaniels look like they walked straight out of a shampoo commercial with their long, flowing ears and big, soulful eyes. These sweethearts are great with kids and have a playful, affectionate nature. They’re always ready for a game of fetch or a cozy cuddle session on the couch.

Shiba Inu

Shiba Inus are the cool, aloof members of the dog world, with their fox-like looks and a need for independence. These dogs have a bit of a stubborn side but are clean and quiet, making them great apartment companions. Just be prepared for them to think they’re in charge – and let’s be honest, they probably are.

Beagle

Beagles are like furry detectives, always sniffing out the next big mystery. Their incredible sense of smell and boundless curiosity keep them busy – and keep you entertained. These friendly, playful pups are great with kids and other pets. But they also like howling out of sheer excitement, often very loudly.

Bearded Collie

With their shaggy coats and bouncy nature, Bearded Collies bring endless joy to any home. These energetic dogs are fantastic with children and always ready for a game or an adventure. However, regular grooming is a must because their coat can get entangled and dirty. As far as they’re concerned, that’s all the more reason to spend time with you!

Brittany

Whoa slow down there Brittany, you’re making all the other dogs jealous with your stunning, colorful coat. Apart from being a fashion icon in the dog universe, Brittanies are packed with energy and have an infinite amount of love to give. But they require the same in return because they don’t respond well to criticism.

Basenji

Basenjis are the silent charmers of the dog world that don’t bark. Instead, they yodel. So well, in fact, that they can act as yodelers in a children’s play. These elegant dogs are clean, curious, and have a touch of independence that makes them intriguing companions.

Cardigan Welsh Corgi

You could put a cardigan on a Cardigan Welsh Corgi to make being around the dog extra funny. But even without that piece of clothing, these dogs have plenty of personality. They are intelligent, loyal, and will always attempt to entertain you with their antics.

Dalmatian

No one knows how, when, and why the Dalmatian breed began having spots because they don’t serve an evolutionary purpose. They do, however, act as a way to make the dogs even more gorgeous (not based on science). These dogs can be a bit stubborn but they are loving companions that love physical activity and play.

Keeshond

Imagine a living, breathing teddy bear that never stops smiling – that’s a Keeshond. These dogs adore being the center of attention and love participating in family activities. Intelligent and easy to train, Keeshonds sprinkle joy and fluff everywhere they go, though the fluff might be a bit of a problem during Summer.

Barbet

The Barbet can be your new water-loving buddy who has curls for days! These rare French dogs are smart, friendly, and great with kids. Whether you want to go for a swim or play fetch with a ball or branch, the Barbet will bring plenty of joy and energy.
