The 15 Dumbest Dog Breeds In The World

It might be unwise to call a dog dumb while it’s near you, because if it hears you trash-talking it, oh boy… While most dogs can solve some basic puzzles, others have jobs such as cashiers, drug sniffers, home destroyers, and the like. But there are also those who aren’t quite the sharpest tools in the shed and their owners relish in their goofy behavior. Which is fine, since if you or I were dogs, we’d probably act dumb to get all the treats and pets as well.

Mastiff

This majestic pooch isn’t really dumb, he’s just selectively brilliant. Commands? He hears you, but unless you’ve got a royal title or a snack that’s worth his attention, good luck getting him to budge. Let’s just say he’s a connoisseur of laziness with an advanced degree in stubbornness. If he had a motto, it’d be, “I’ll think about it… tomorrow.”

Basset Hound

The Basset Hound, with those droopy ears and soulful eyes, is a professional in the art of sniffing and snoozing. He’s incredibly focused on the important things in life—like napping and following that intriguing scent trail straight to nowhere. Commands often fall on floppy ears because, let’s face it, he’s got a one-track mind and it’s usually set to “sniff.”

Beagle

Ah, the Beagle! This merry little hound is all about the nose, often forgetting that he has a brain too. Heel and sit you say? He’ll get back to you once he’s done investigating that fascinating patch of grass over there. With a Beagle, you’re not dealing with a dog, but a nose on legs with an insatiable curiosity.

Bloodhound

The Bloodhound is the Sherlock Holmes of the dog world—if Sherlock constantly got sidetracked by random clues, often to the point of forgetting what he was originally sniffing for. Bloodhounds are too busy solving the mystery of “What’s that smell?” to worry about trivial things like sit or stay.

Pekingese

The Pekingese is a pint-sized pooch with the attitude of a queen. This little fluff ball isn’t dumb; she’s just convinced she’s royalty and you’re the loyal subject. With her flowing mane and regal strut, the Pekingese knows she’s destined for a life of leisure, not labor. Her world revolves around being pampered, adored, and, of course, doing absolutely nothing she doesn’t want to do. Kind of like a cat.

Chow Chow

If dogs had dog philosophers in their world, the Chow Chow would be one of the most famous and arguably, the one with the dumbest thoughts. With a look of perpetual wisdom, the Chow Chow exudes an air of majestic indifference. He’s not ignoring you—he’s just pondering life’s bigger questions, like, “Why should I come when called?”

Borzoi

While the Borzoi’s long legs and flowing coat scream sophistication, their mind often wanders through the clouds. Training a Borzoi can feel like asking a cat to fetch—good luck! This noble breed prefers to spend their time in serene contemplation, often gazing into the distance as if pondering some great existential mystery.

Basenji

Look out for this Houdini of the dog world because they’ll show you a trick and disappear, chasing a squirrel or digging all the way down to China. Also, if you’re a fan of yodeling, you’ll be a fan of this dog because they don’t howl like normal dogs. No no, the Basenji needs to be the center of attention and the best way for them to do that is by trying to howl but screaming like a yodeller instead.

Bulldog

Bulldogs have perfected the art of lounging. There’s nothing better (or smarter) in a bulldog’s life than laying on its back and taking in the sun. Training a Bulldog often feels like negotiating with a brick wall—they hear you, but they’re just too comfortable to care. Commands are met with a slow blink and a yawn, as if to say, “Maybe later.”

Afghan Hound

The Afghan Hound is more concerned with looking fabulous than following orders, making them the glamorous airheads we can’t help but adore. Commands, however, are often lost in the wind as they gracefully prance by. Their aloof and independent nature gives them an air of mystery, but let’s be honest—they’re usually just daydreaming about their next beauty nap.

Pug

Pugs are the resident clowns of the dog world. This breed is more likely to entertain you with their goofy antics and endless charm than to fetch a stick. Pugs live for comfort and cuddles, and while they might not ace obedience school, they certainly excel in making you smile with their playful and loving nature.

Bull Terrier

Wouldn’t you agree that bull terriers kind of have a face shaped like an egg? It’s supposed to be all strong and scary-looking but these softies have mush for brains. Jokes aside, even if you end up with a silly bull terrier, their infectious zest for life will make every day a hilarious adventure. Besides, who can stay indifferent to that eggish face?

Chihuahua

Many people call chihuahuas little demons that have a bossy attitude toward everyone and everything. Though, their fearlessness may be because they have the smallest brain out of any dog. But that won’t stop them from being adorable when they feel like it, and they’ll sometimes even show a glimpse of brilliance when you least expect it!

Border Collie

Border Collies are too smart for their own good, so they end up being dumb instead. Funny how that works! Anyway, these dogs have a tendency to overthink everything. Want it to return the ball? How about it throws it into the bushes instead just to see what happens. But they do take work seriously and very rarely slack off while herding animals.

Shih Tzu

The Shih Tzu is lapdog royalty that knows it deserves nothing but the best. These fluffy little divas have mastered the art of looking adorable while doing absolutely nothing. They also look wiser than they actually are (the doggy moustache effect) so don’t go around asking it to solve any puzzles. Not because they can’t, but because being pampered is much more enticing.
